IRS Opens to little fanfare

The IRS opened officially today and it looks like things are running pretty smooth, but remember they’re going to hold most refunds until at least February 15.  Honestly, we’re not holding our breath for that date and expect something like February 24th at the earliest.  Maybe they’ll exceed our expectations (*cough*).  If you really need at least some of your refund sooner, you can request a RAL (Refund Anticipation Loan) of up to $1200.  We have already had a few happy clients receive those funds in roughly 24 hours.

A Few Notes:

Everyone should receive some sort of Healthcare form (1095-A or 1095-B) again this year.  We need this form along with the rest of your tax documents.  The President has already issued an Executive Order concerning the Obamacare Penalties, but how everything is going to play out is still up in the air.  Meanwhile, Obamacare is still the law of the land and the penalties for not having health insurance still apply, though we expect them to be “forgiven” sometime in the future.

Most tax forms (W-2’s, 1099’s, etc) are supposed to be mailed to you by January 31, but Brokerage Statements (1099-B) get a few extra weeks because they have friends at Congress or something.

Partnership Returns are due on March 15 this year.  That’s a month earlier than previous years!
