The IRS is open and processing 2021 income tax returns, but most early filers still won’t see refunds until after February 15th. You should have already received (or soon will) all your W-2 and 1099-NEC (self-employment) forms as well as healthcare (1095) and tuition (1098-T) forms. Retirement accounts (1099-R) usually come over the next couple weeks, and brokerage accounts sometime after that. Keep in mind that many forms are available online before you receive them in the mail, and many colleges don’t mail 1098-T forms at all (you have to get them online).
Our preparer schedules are starting to get tight over the next week or so, and as everyone gets their tax forms, they will be even tighter, so the sooner you can schedule an appointment, the better!
Now for our obligatory fraud warning. Tax ID scams are in full swing this time of year, so be careful clicking any email or web links unless you are certain they are real. Ask me if unsure! The IRS will never initiate contact with you by email. Some states might, but typically you will receive a letter first. They also will not call you initially. Bottom line, if you aren’t EXPECTING (you know what I mean) them to contact you, be skeptical! If unsure, contact me before sharing any personal info or clicking that link! It’s a scary cyber world out there!
